Looking for something to do with the kiddos on a nice day but don’t have it in you to schlep to the playground and chase everyone around attempting to keep the little ones from getting hurt? Need to find something crafty for the hooligans that won’t destroy your living room (like finger painting) or take too long for a short attention span (like, I don’t know, knitting a scarf)? I am a huge proponent of driveway chalk time. It’s cheap, available in most grocery and even C-stores. You can leave the mess outside and the artwork cleans up after itself (thanks to mother nature and “May showers.”) With supervision of course, kids are safely away from the street and they have an outlet for creating to their hearts content.
I may sound boasty in saying that these are the BEST chalk drawings IN THE WORLD, but in my defense, this does not reflect my personal creative prowess. I typically make an attempt at drawing Thomas the Tank Engine or Cookie Monster or the neighbor’s dog and then my counterpart, A.K.A. Super Dad comes to the rescue and fixes them up (also known as completely redrawing them). My excuses range from — I’m too cheap to use THAT much chalk (because frankly it takes an entire stick of green chalk to make a decent Oscar the Grouch) as well as, it was “so hot outside, I couldn’t focus with that much sweat running down my face.” I know, lame excuses. But take a look, no matter what I do, Dad will always kick my butt in the chalk drawing competition!
Check out some of the latest artwork from Super Dad (and my boys of course).
